How to prep your lips for some lipstick love

How to prep your lips for some lipstick love

A perfectly painted pout can help tie any look together. So it's important to take the necessary steps to ensure you do it right when it comes to your lipstick.

Tip #1: Find the right shade for your skin tone

When it comes to picking a lipstick, let your undertones be your guide. If your veins are blue and silver jewellery complements you best, then you've got cool undertones. This means that blue or purple-based hues will flatter you the most. Meanwhile, if your veins are green and gold jewellery looks best against your skin, then you have warm undertones. In that case, opt for red or orangey hues.

Tip #2: Exfoliate first

Dryness and flakes can ruin the way lipstick looks on your lips. To battle that, use a lip scrub to help exfoliate dead skin cells from your lips and soften them. Make sure to go in gentle circular motions, and then rinse off with a damp cloth.

Tip #3: Prime your pout

After you're done exfoliating, go ahead and apply a lip primer. Primer can help create a smooth canvas for your liquid lipstick application. If you don't have a lip primer on hand, don't worry! You can just dab on a little bit of foundation or concealer.

Tip #4: Line your lips

Next up, lip liner! This product can help prevent colour from bleeding outside the lines. Use an invisible lip liner or one that closely matches the colour of your lips. While you can over line your lips to help create the illusion of a fuller-looking pout, only do so slightly as going overboard can end up looking cartoonish.

Tip #5: Swipe on some colour!!

Now it's time for the fun part! Make sure the colour you've chosen compliments your undertones and apply it in soft, single stroke motions.

Tip #6: Keep the rest of your makeup simple

A word to the wise; let your lips be the star of the show. Keep the rest of your makeup subdued using just a full coverage foundation, and swiping on a coat of volumizing mascara. Lastly, top it off with a thin line of eyeliner

Tip #7: Take it all off at the end of the day

After strutting around town with your gorgeous lips, it is essential to take it all off before you hit the sheets. Just use a cotton swab, pour a drop of coconut oil on it, and swipe it all off.
